The Best Antioxidants For Your Skin - Part One

As we have previously mentioned, antioxidants help protect the skin from free radicals – unstable and highly reactive molecules that cause damage to the cells by stealing electrons from other sources. Free radicals come from both external and internal sources. In the body, they exist in normal essential metabolic functions, and externally from the ozone, pollution, industrial chemicals used in food and in cleaning, and in X-rays, to name a few. This damage can affect DNA, protein, the matrix, and the outer barrier of our skin. Four out of five of our wrinkles come from environmental damage, so it is imperative that we have the protection of antioxidants in our skincare to help fight the aging process. You are never too young to start introducing antioxidants into your skincare routine.

So what are the best antioxidants for our skin? There are several to take into consideration.

VITAMIN C

Also known as ascorbic acid, this potent antioxidant is a favorite in the skin care/dermatological industry. Not only does vitamin C help to lighten dark spots and even and brighten skin tone, it fights free radicals by binding them and removing them from the skin. Vitamin C is known to stimulate collagen production (think reducing fine lines!), protects against UV damage, and helps to thicken the dermis layer.

VITAMIN A

This antioxidant encourages healthy skin cell turnover, and can often be found in topical creams such as retinal, retinol, and retinoic acid, all in a variety of strengths. Vitamin A targets and stimulates fibroblasts, which are cells responsible for developing the tissue that keeps skin healthy and firm (youthful!). Vitamin A helps strengthen and protect the barrier of the skin, keeping it healthy and strong for fighting against pollutants and irritants, as well as bacteria and infections.

When using Vitamin A topically, it is best to start off two times a week in the evenings, and add days once your skin has adjusted. During the day, adding a mineral-based sunscreen is imperative at protecting the new skin cells that vitamin A has helped bring to the surface.

VITAMIN B3

Vitamin B3, also known as Niacinamide, packs quite a punch when it comes to antioxidants and offers many benefits. Niacinamide offers immunity support as it helps to build keratin, which keeps skin firm and healthy, and helps to grow the skins lipid barrier, which helps to maintain moisture. Vitamin B3 is also known to regulate oil production, treat acne – especially inflammatory kinds — and diminish fine lines and wrinkles by treating sun damage. Vitamin B3 helps to minimize the appearance of pores, as well as treat redness, hyperpigmentation, and blotchiness.

Niacinamide can be used daily, both mornings and evenings, and can be easily layered with other serums, but always added before moisturizer.

As mentioned in the benefits of Vitamin A, it is always wise to add a mineral SPF to your daily routine to protect your skin to prevent further damage, and to protect new skin cells.

6 Reasons Antioxidants Should Be In Your Skincare Routine

Antioxidants have been quite the buzzword in the beauty industry, but what exactly are antioxidants? Simply put, antioxidants fight against free radicals and help protect the skin from cellular damage. They are the skins defense mechanism.

Free radicals are everywhere and cause damage, which isn’t typically seen right away, but does considerable damage nonetheless. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells because they are missing electrons. The unstable molecules are constantly trying to bond to atoms or molecules that have these electrons to feel whole again, which causes oxidative stress, or chemical chain reactions inside the body. Oxidative stress is a term used to describe the imbalance of antioxidants and free radicals in the body, and antioxidants help to stabilize free radicals, keeping them from reacting with other molecules.

In skincare, antioxidants play a vital role, and here are the reasons they should be in your skincare routine…

1. Antioxidants aide in correcting signs of aging.

Antioxidants reduce inflammation caused by free radicals, which allows the skin to repair visible damage. Inflammation can be seen as blotchiness, saggy skin, fine lines, wrinkles and acne.

2. Antioxidants brighten and even skin tone.

Free radicals can cause changes in our skins natural melanin production, which in turn leads to dark spots and uneven skin tone. Antioxidants reduce photodamage, or abnormal skin pigmentation such as hyperpigmentation and melasma.

3. Antioxidants can help boost collagen production.

Not all antioxidants help boost collagen production, but antioxidants like vitamin C are known for both protecting the skin and creating more collagen in the body. It is important to note that the body cannot produce vitamin C on its own, so it is important to add it to your skincare routine. Many skincare lines have topical vitamin C options both alone and mixed in serums and moisturizers, but it is also important to add it to your diet through leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits.

4. Antioxidants may fight against certain forms of cancer.

Some antioxidants are anti-carcinogenic, such as vitamins A, C, and E. There have been studies done that suggest antioxidants may slow and/or prevent the development of cancer.

5. Antioxidants can firm skin.

Antioxidants help in reversing the signs of aging and improving skin health. Certain antioxidants like Coenzyme Q-10 are known for their skin firming abilities, and are great for use in products meant to lift and tone the skin.

6. Antioxidants can help improve scar appearance.

Scar tissue is more rigid than normal, healthy tissue. Certain antioxidants, such as those found in aloe, increase blood circulation to the scar area. This in turn makes the scar tissue visibly blend in with normal tissue, reducing its appearance. This study suggests that appropriate doses of vitamin E - not pure vitamin E - can also improve scar appearance by softening the tissue.

It’s no doubt that antioxidants play a vital role in the overall health of our skin. It is important to add products packed with a variety of antioxidants to your morning and evening routine to keep your skin in its best shape and appearance.

PRFM for Aesthetics

Platelet-Rich Fibrous Matrix, or PRFM, has become very popular in the aesthetic industry. Slightly different that Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), PRFM is PRP mixed with a small amount of calcium gluconate causing a chemical reaction that converts fibrinogen into a stronger fiber matrix .

For those looking for alternatives to synthetic fillers and want to look more youthful in the most natural way possible, PRFM is an excellent option. Using PRFM during micro-channeling and other ablative treatments is another great option as it enhances results above and beyond what the procedures can do alone.

There are many ways PRFM can be used aesthetically. One way is to address specific concerns, which may lead a patient to initially consider a facelift. For those who aren’t yet ready or willing to take that step, a facelift via PRFM is a more affordable and natural option. You can wake up the next day feeling and looking fantastic without significant swelling, bruising, itching, or lumps and bumps.

Areas that can be addressed can include the following

• Upper jawbone: eliminates sagging and increases the jaw angle.
• Lower jawbone: lifts the jowl area and adds volume.
• Upper cheekbone: tightens and enhances area.
• Lower cheek: restores cheek structure.
• Tear trough and mid-face: addresses the hollowness under the eyes.
• Nasolabial folds: Fills in and reduces laugh lines
• Corner of the mouth: addresses Marionette lines

In addition to using PRFM along with micro-channeling, which will expedite healing, improve texture, diminish scars, and reduce pores, your results can be nothing short of amazing. In fact, both can be done the same day, as long as the micro-channeling procedure comes first.

Results to treat any or all of the above areas generally last about a year. For those patients who need or would like touch-ups, their results are still improved from before the filler. However, it is important to remember that this is a natural filler, and will not give you the much more immediate and noticeable results of products such as Juvederm and Restylane. The results of using PRFM also takes more time, but ultimately can be a very satisfying without the risks of using synthetic fillers.

The Beauty of Hydrafacial Treatment

Looking in the mirror, you may have noticed that your skin needs help. You see blackheads, whiteheads, rough and/or oily patches, and dullness. No amount of washing, serums, or physical exfoliation seem to alleviate the issues. This is usually a key sign that your skin could use extra attention.

That attention can be given by booking a Hydrafacial treatment. Many issues can be addressed depending on your skincare concerns. You may be asking, how is a Hydrafacial different from normal facials? This is a great question. A Hydrafacial initially focuses on extraction. According to hydrafacial.com , the facial is a 3 step process, takes 30 minutes, and will give you the best skin of your life! The company uses patented technology to deeply cleanse, extract, and hydrate the skin, with options of different serums to address specific skin care concerns. The process can be personalized!

It starts with cleansing and exfoliation. This is a very comfortable process, and the idea is to reveal a new layer of skin. Instead of dermabrasion, Hydradermabrasion is used, with a tool that is described as a gentle handheld suction tool. The suction is used to remove impurities from your pores, such as excessive dirt and oil, as opposed to blasting or aggressive squeezing. The suction also stimulates circulation, which helps create a beautiful glow to the skin’s surface.

During the Hydradermabrasion process, your choice of serums are infused into the skin at the same time the dirt and debris are sucked out. But again, it is a very comfortable process. The booster serums you can choose from are as follows:

• Growth Factor Boost: Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins, which maintain healthy skin structure and function. This boost is specifically designed to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

• Dermabuilder Boost: Key ingredients Acetyl octapeptide-3 and palmitoyl dipeptides-5 – skin conditioning peptides — address fine lines, skin tone, texture, and the overall evenness of the skin.

• Brightalive Boost: Hydrafacial’s Skin Brightening Complex is a unique blend of skin brighteners that are designed to block the production of pigmentation. The unique complex consists of Ogliopeptide-68, Nanopeptide-1, Diglucosyl Gallic Acid, and N-Acetyl Glucosamine, and also contains glycerin. Glycerin restores hydration.

• Britenol Boost: This formula targets dark spots and areas with sun damage. It is clinically proven to create a more even complexion with the following ingredients: Alpha-Arbutin (derived from bearberry extract), and vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that also helps to lighten and brighten the skin.

With so many options, a Hydrafacial is literally for every skin type! Your skin will be plump and hydrated immediately after, and is perfect before special events as there is zero downtime. Dark spots and pigmentation will continue to diminish with regular treatments. Results are noticeable for up to a week, and treatment is recommended every 3-6 weeks to address ongoing issues and concerns.

7 Reasons To Wear Sunscreen

While a little sun may not be harmful from time to time, excessive sun exposure can be dangerous, but do you know why?  Take a look at these top seven reasons to make a habit of including sunscreen in your everyday routine.

1.      Lowers skin cancer risks:

According to the FCPP, skin cancer is one of the top cancers in the United States, divided into two categories – melanoma and non-melanoma. While most skin cancers are curable, melanoma is the worst and can be life threatening.

2.      Sun damage is cumulative:

You cannot build up a safe tan, and every exposure can contribute to possible damage. It is estimated that only 23 percent of sun damage occurs by the age of 18, and 47 percent occurs between 19-40. It is also important to remember that the sun’s rays are still strong even when it isn’t sunny. While we covet a beautiful bronzy glow, this can be achieved through other options such as a spray tan, self-tanner, and tinted lotions. Nowadays there are many options, where you can achieve an instant tan, or build up a tan over time.

3.      Most visible signs of aging come from years of sun damage:

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, it is estimated that 90 percent (**) of skin aging comes from sun exposure. Wearing sunscreen daily can save your skin from years of aging down the line, especially on areas consistently exposed such as the face, neck, chest, and hands.

4.      Prevents uneven skin tone, skin irritations, and blotchiness:

Applying sunscreen on your face helps to prevent melasma, hyperpigmentation, redness, and even acne. However, it is important to choose the right kind of sunscreen that won’t further irritate these conditions. Studies have shown that mineral sunscreens (aka “physical sunscreens”) have the best success in prevention, especially if the top ingredient is zinc oxide. Sunscreens higher in synthetic ingredients can cause melasma and other spots to become darker. Zinc offers the best protections as it sits on the surface of the skin and reflects light, as opposed to synthetic ingredients, which absorb the UV rays within the skin and temporarily trap heat. Heat within the skin can cause inflammation. It is important to check the ingredients on the sunscreen you buy even if it says ‘mineral’ or ‘natural’, because the ingredients can still allow synthetic blockers. Applying topical antioxidants along with physical sunscreens can also help repair pigmentation disorders.

5.      Damage can occur with certain medications

There are many medications that cause serious sun sensitivity. These can include Acne medications (retin-a, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide) and antibiotics (tetracyclines and fluoriqinolones). Some are surprised to learn that allergy medications can also cause photosensitivity (look for the ingredient diphenydramine found in Benadryl), as well as overheating. Additional medications to be aware of are antidepressants, NSAIDs, topical medications, and certain vitamins and herbs, such as St. John’s Wort and Niacin (Vitamin B3). Be sure to check all medications with your pharmacist.

6.      Enhances skin health and appearance longterm:

Sunscreen has the ability to protect the essential skin proteins, collagen, elastin, and keratin, which are affected by elements and time, and responsible for keeping the skin youthful. When exposed to sun and other elements, the skin suffers and photoaging occurs. Early signs include taut lips that lose fullness, definition and color, pigmentation (freckles and age spots), deeper wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, and a rough and/or leathery texture.

In a study published by Dermatologic Surgery, 100 percent of the 32 participants using sunscreen daily over 52 weeks showed significant improvement in the skin’s overall appearance. Once protected from sun damage, the skin was able to regenerate itself by producing new collagen. Collagen promotes skin elasticity, can reverse signs of skin aging, and has other significant health benefits.

7.      Can easily fit in your daily routine.

Long gone are the days where sunscreen turned you instantly into a greasy ghost with streaks on your face. Sunscreen can be found in everyday products such as moisturizer, foundation, and pressed and loose powder. With advanced technology, certain sunscreens have hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, and is excellent for arid climates and dry skin conditions. There are many ways to include sunscreen in your daily routine, and many options that reach a multitude of budgets and skincare concerns. However, if you prefer to use sunscreen separately, you can add a layer after moisturizer and before makeup, or after using primer and before makeup. To ensure your makeup goes on smoothly, it is best to use a sunscreen designed for the face.
